Question About Baking Soda And Carpet Cleaning?

I know that a use of baking soda is to clean carpets, and that you can leave it there and then vacuum it up. I realized that I did the first step, but sort of just scrubbed the white carpet with a dry towel and never vacuumed. Can leaving the baking soda on the carpet cause damage? Because I might not return to the house that this occurred in for a while. Is it urgent that I get there anytime soon? As in, can the baking soda leave a new stain?

While they won’t be eating the cleaner, they will be lying on the carpet, breathing fumes, and may occasionally lick the carpet. (Sigh.)
The carpet is too dirty for plain baking soda to help much.
I welcome your answers; please let me know if you have used the method yourself.
