How Do I Prepare A Cement Floor For Carpet Installation? Do I Need To Worry About Small Amounts Of Adhesive?

We removed old carpeting from our basement. It had been glued to the cement and though we used an ice scraper to remove most of the carpet foam there are spots where a slight residue remains. Do I need a special chemical to remove the residue, or will the new padding and carpet mask this?

You will be fine if you get all the “Big” stuff up. Since it is in the basement i would put a vapor barrier down before the padding. The easiest and cheapest would be a good layer of latex paint. when it is dry install tack strips, the ones with masonry nails not the ones for a wood sub-floor (no glue or adhesive needed) about 1½”-2″ from the wall. Install padding leaving a small space from the tack strips, then install carpet making sure to stretch it well.
I’m a general contractor (Masterpiece Painting and Home Improvement)from the Philadelphia area, and I’ve dealt with this situation several times. As long as the slight residue you are referring to will not make the new carpet padding bulge, then you should be okay. On concrete, you should use adhesive to adhere your padding or else the carpet will need stretched again before too long. Just use a 6″ notched trowel and spread it evenly with the notched edge. Also, the tack strip has to be glued against the walls instead of nailed in, unlike on a wood floor where nails would be used. Good luck!
