Average Cost Of Carpet Installation?

We are recarpeting two rooms in our house, each has a small closet. Total square footage is about 300 square feet. I’m wondering what the average cost of installation is, specifically in the Puget Sound area. Do they generally charge by square foot? Or per hour? I have tried calling and everyone says we have to have a salesman come over for a quote, which I don’t want if possible.
It would be over a pad, cut pile, normal carpet. We will be removing the old carpet, so that’s not of concern.

The reason they want to come out is so they can get an accurate measurement. You would be surprised how many people have trouble getting accurate sq ft. If they take your word on 300 sq ft and it turns out to be 375 and you don’t want to pay the difference they just wasted a lot of time.
should be around .30-.40 cents a square foot. this does not include stairs which are normally $2.00-$4.00. this is in the chicagoland area from a number of installers i provide to people at menards.
