A Legitimate Sales Job?

I just got a job from a distributing company today and I start this Wednesday. I took the job but I am somewhat confused as to what the job requires. On the newspaper it advertised as a position that was in no way what was explained to me in the interview. I spoke with the manager and he told me that I would set up displays and appointments and describe products to them. I was somewhat upset because I felt like I was lied to when they ad in the paper (the ad was for a position in which I have experience in). On the ad it read that I would make $300 to $500 a week and there was no experience necessary. At my interview the building I was in seemed a little run-down and unofficial and seemed like they had just moved in, the carpet was kind of gross and dirty like it hasn’t been cleaned. I am a little worried because it seems like there is some kind of catch. I have never dealt with this before. Help

From what you posted, it sounds like a straight commission sales position. If you don’t close any sales on the product you demonstrate, you won’t get paid.
    1. Did they tell you what the product is that you’ll be displaying?
    2. Are you setting appointments to go to the prospects home?
    3. Do you have experience in direct selling?
If your answers are 1. No, 2. Yes, 3. No, you could spend several hours or days without making a sale and legally only paid for your mileage.
What is scheduled for your first day? Training or getting dumped out in the field with a sales kit?
From the description you posted about the filthy office, my advice is to never go back.

If your gut feelings leave you uncomfortable with the company, you should listen to your gut and not accept the job.

From what you describe, I agree with you that there is some kind of catch, even worse, it may be a front for some kind of illegal or criminal activity.

sounds shady to me. i would just quit before things start to turn ugly.

It sounds like a direct sales company where you market products or services and are paid a commission for your efforts. If you have any confusion about what exactly this entails, contact the person who hired you and clarify what you will be doing. If you’re fine with it, you can proceed. If no, it’s not too late to walk away.
